We won our next two matches; first by defeating Centerville 14-5 then beating Comfort 10-7. We lost our last match to Floydada 6-10.
It was a great weekend; the kids got to play a lot of good tennis. This is a great team and they are so competitive. I also wanted to give a big thanks to all the parents and to our A.D. Coach Cone for coming to support Somerville at the State Tournament. On Friday and Saturday, Feb 29 and March 1, 2008 the Somerville tennis team played in the Regional Team Tennis Tournament. There were 7 teams that competed in this tournament. They were Edna, Industrial, Brazos, Shiner, East Bernard, Schulenburg, and Somerville. Somerville placed 2nd and will be going to the State Team Tennis Tournament held March 14 and 15 in the Round Rock area. It has been three years since Somerville has been to the State Team Tennis Tournament. In team tennis you compete as a team rather than as an individual. It is set up like a regular bracket. There are 19 matches that are played: 3 boys doubles, 3 girls doubles, 6 boys singles, 6 girls singles and 1 mixed doubles. The team that wins 10 matches moves to the winner’s side of the bracket. This put Somerville in the bracket for 3rd and 4th place. We played Industrial and defeated them 10-3. Because Edna had beaten Brazos in the championship game and we had not played Brazos yet there was a playback. A playback is just a way to ensure the top two teams advance. Somerville defeated Brazos (the number 2 seed) 11-8, which made Somerville the true 2nd place team. We really can together as a team this weekend. In team tennis every point counts weather you are playing in the #1 position or in the #6 position. This really became evident in the last two matches of the day against Brazos. The #6 boy, Derek Cotton and #6 girl, Aubri Cooper were playing and we had to win one of those matches to win against Brazos. They both pulled it out#Cotton won 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 and Cooper won 6-3, 6-3. T.J. Rector and Jaie Rodriguez had the best records of the day winning all of their 8 matches. Other players that played really well were Matt Gaas and Brad Siegert. They defeated Edna’s #1 boy’s doubles that went to state last year. Gaas also won 3 of his 4 singles matches. Lindsay Knesek and Kacy Novosad won 3 of their 4 doubles matches. Kelly Siegert won 3 of her 4 singles matches and 3 of her 4 doubles matches. Alex Rudd and Anthony Nissen won all of their doubles matches. Kimber Dowell won 2 of her 4 doubles matches. Loren Cooper won 2 of her 3 doubles matches and won all of her singles matches. Kelly Korth won 3 of her 4 doubles matches. Other members of the team that played great were Stuart Bartek, Anthony Ramey and Patricia Munoz. On Saturday, February 23 the Somerville JV tennis team traveled to Taylor for the Granger JV Tennis Tournament. It was a great tournament—everyone played well and for some it was their first tournament ever. We know now what we need to work on to get ready for the next tournament.
On Friday, February 15, Somerville tennis team traveled to Robinson for a 19-team tournament. Somerville placed 9th overall.
On Feb 7 Somerville hosted a 7-team tennis tournament. The teams were Brenham, Bellville, Columbus, LaGrange, Smithville, Madisonville, and Somerville. Results are shown below:
On Jan. 29th the Yeguas traveld to Bryan inorder to meet the Madisonville Mustangs in a dual tennis match. The Mustangs came out ahead winning 11 out of the 17 matches. On Jan. 18 Somerville hosted the Brenham Cubs in a dual tennis match. We played 19 matches and Brenham won 12 while Somerville won 7. We played alright considering this was Brenham's varsity team. We lost three matches because of tie breaks...we have to win tie breaks. Tie breaks in tennis are like free throws in a basketball game. Fall Team Tennis The Fall Tennis team includes: (standing) Derek Cotton,Anthony Nissen, Matt Gaas, Brad Siegert, and T J Rector; (middle) Carina Bernal and Kelly Siegert; (sitting) Kacy Novosad, Kelly Korth, Lindsay Knesek, and Jessica Kempenich. Missing Jaie Rodriguez, Barbara Jimenez, Anthony Ramey, and Jessica Ingram On Nov 19th, Somerville hosted Smithville. The Smithville won 11 matches while Somerville won 8 matches. In boys doubles, Somerville won 2 out of the 3 matches. In girls doubles, each school won a match. In mixed doubles, the Yegua team won the match. On Oct 28th, Somerville Tennis team played Groesbeck. The Yeguas came out on top winning 15 of the 27 matches played. On Thursday Oct 11, Somerville Tennis team traveled to Bryan High to play a dual match. Bryan High won 13 matches while Somerville won 11. Some of the mathces were very close and could have gone either way. As the first match of the year, we did very well. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
