Somerville Softball Game ReportSubmitted by: Coach OwensOn Wednesday, April 2nd, the Somerville Lady Yegua Softball Team Faced the Top-ranked AA team in the state, the Franklin Lady Lions, loosing 16-2. Leading hitters for the Yequas were Kimber Dowell, 2-3, double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI; Raeann Bentke, 1-2, double and 1 RBI; and Olivia Arredondo, 1-2 1 run scored. The Lady Yequas game scheduled for Friday, April 4th was cancelled due to weather and will be made up on Monday, April 14th. The ladies of Somerville Softball stand at 4-5 in district 26AA one game behind 3rd place Lexington. We are scheduled to host those Lexington Lady Eagles on Tuesday, April 8th at 4:30 and also host New Waverly on Friday, April 11th for a doubleheader in Brenham. On Tuesday, March 25th, the Somerville Lady Yegua Softball Team traveled to Hearne to play a doubleheader against the Lady Eagles, winning 16-0 and 19-2. In the first game Loren Cooper took the win, giving up 2 hits, striking out 6, and walking none. Leading hitters were Kimber Dowell going 3-3 and Olivia Arredondo and Aubri Cooper both going 2-2. In the second game Morgan Maldonado was victorious, giving up 1 earned run, 2 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. Leading hitters for game two were Cynthia Rodriquez going 4-4, Morgan Maldonado 3-4, Kimber Dowell and Raeann Bentke both going 2-3 and Lindsay Knesek going 2-2. Outstanding defense was played in both games by Phallen Garcia, Megan Moreno, Rachel Pugh, and Sabrina Rodriquez. On Friday, March 28th, The Somerville Softball Team took on the second place team in district 26AA, the Onalaska Lady Bulldogs, losing a very close game 6-3. There was no score in the game until the bottom of the 5th when Olivia Arredondo led off with a bunt single, followed by Rachel Pugh receiving a base on balls. After the first out was made, Cynthia Rodriquez hit a 2-2 pitch to center field to score two runs with Pugh just beating the tag at home. Then Lindsay Knesek hit a single over the short-stops head to score Rodriquez. However, the Lady Bulldogs came right back to score 6 runs in the top of the 6th and held on for the victory. Morgan Maldonado did a great job on the mound, giving up 9 hits, 4 strike-outs, and 4 walks. Defensive highlights were center fielder Lindsey Knesek throwing to catcher Kimber Dowell to get the out at home, great catches by Rachel Pugh, Megan Moreno, and Olivia Arredondo. Leading hitter for Somerville were Cynthia Rodriquez 3-4, 1 run and 2 RBI’s, Lindsay Knesek 2-4 and 1 RBI, and Olivia Arredondo going 1-3 with 1 run scored. The ladies of Somerville Softball stand at 4-4 in district 26AA one game behind 3rd place Lexington. We are scheduled to play the Franklin Lady Lions, ranked #1 in the state, on Wednesday, April 2nd and travel to Trinity on Friday, April 4th. Over spring break, the Somerville Softball Team overcame the weather to go 1 and 1 in District 26 AA play. With the heavy rain on Monday, Tuesday’s game scheduled to be played at Trinity was moved to Brenham. The ladies of Somerville won 17-9. Leading hitters were Loren Cooper 3-3 1 run scored and a double, Kimber Dowell 2-3 3 runs scored and a double, and Morgan Maldonado 2-3 3runs an a double. Raeann Bentke, Megan Moreno, and Lindsey Knesek each made outstanding defensive plays in the field. Morgan Maldonado pitched 4 1/3 innings to get the win and Loren Cooper picked up the save in relief. The Somerville Softball Team took on the top ranked team in the state, the Franklin Lions, loosing 16-1. With some starters missing and other playing out of position, the ladies still played hard the entire game. Morgan Maldonado took the loss, competing the entire game. Phallan Garcia went 1-2 and Megan Moreno scored a run. Kimber Dowell and Lindsey Knesek made play in field. The ladies of Somerville Softball stand at 1-2 in district 26AA tied for 3rd play with Lexington. We are scheduled to play Lexington on Wednesday, March 19th and Hempstead on March 20th. Both games are scheduled for home, but weather may change the sites. 2/19/08 Game at Schulenburg The Lady Yeguas traveled to Schulenburg to face the Lady Shorthorns, loosing 8-2. The Yeguas opened the scoring in the top of the second, with Megan Moreno leading off with a double to left-center, she was moved to third by Loren Cooper and scored on a grounder by Phallen Garcia. The Shorthorns responded with 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th, with 5 hits and a walk to make the Score 5-1. The Yeguas loaded the bases in the top of the 3rd but could not plate any runs. The Shorthorns added a run in the 3rd and 4th innings to make the score 7-1 after 4 complete innings. The Lady Yeguas scored their last run of the evening in the 6th with a double by Kimber Dowell, followed by a double by Morgan Maldanaldo. The Shorthorns added 1 additional run in the bottom of the 6th to complete the scoring 8-2. Loren Cooper took the loss giving up 9 hits and striking out 5. Strong defensive plays were made by Olivia Arredondo, Morgan Maldonaldo, Kimber Dowell, and Megan Moreno. 2/22-23/08 Tournament at Austin ISD The Lady Yeguas traveled to Austin to participate in the Austin ISD Softball Tournament. The Yeguas opened the tournament with a 14-2 victory over Austin Lanier. Leading hitters for the game were Cyndi Rodriquez 2-2, Aubir Cooper 2-2, and Sabrina Rodriquez 1-1 with an inside-the-park home run. Loren Cooper and Morgan Maldanaldo combined for a 5 hitter with 6 strike-outs. Lyndsey Knesek, and Olivia Arredondo were solid on defense. The Lady Yeguas 2nd opponent was the Rams of Austin Johnston, which the Lady Yeguas defeated 15-4. Leading hitters were Raeann Bentke 4-4, Kimber Dowell and Lyndsey Knesek both 3-3, and Aubri Cooper 3-4. Morgan Maldanaldo gave up 3 hits and stuck out 4. The Lady Yeguas Friday night faced their 3rd 4A team of the day in Austin Crockett, a 3 round playoff team last year, loosing 12-4. The Yeguas had the score at 7-4 before the last inning of the night. Leading hitters were Morgan Maldanaldo 2-4, Aubri Cooper 1-2, and Kimber Dowell 1-3. Loren Cooper took the loss. After a long day of playing Friday, the Lady Yeguas turned around Saturday morning to play play-off team Johnson City, loosing 8-2. Leading hitters were Kimber Dowell 3-4, and Lyndsey Knesek 1-2. Defensive plays were made by Cyndi Rodriquez, and Olivia Arredondo. Loren Cooper took the loss. The Lady Yeguas just ran out of gas, facing Austin Crockett for a second time in two days, loosing 12-1. Highlights were KImber Dowell 2nd home run of the season and Rachel Pugh outstanding catch in the outfield. Morgan Maldanaldo took the loss. The Lady Yeguas open District play at Onalaska Feb. 26th at 4:30.
