Somerville vs Burton

On August 27th, as storms cancelled football games all around the state, the Somerville Yeguas hosted the Burton Panthers at “the Rock” to begin the 2007 football season. The Somerville offense had a fine showing behind the running and catching of Justin Johnson. Justin ran for 127 yards and caught 4 passes for 47 yard. Cody Holiday was 10 of 20 for 219 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jeff Foster caught 2 passes for 84 yards. Jonathan Armijo caught one pass for 37 yards and a touchdown. Kevin Roberts had three catches for 51 yards and a touchdown. Lorenzo “Red” Moreno had 12 cuts, Raul Ruiz had seven cuts and one pancake, Bobby Ortega had no bad snaps and five cuts, BJ Nunn had 4 cuts and Aaron Buckley had one pancake and seven cuts as they did a good job of protecting Cody and opening holes for Justin and Cody to run through. Bobby Ortega also did the punting for the Yeguas averaging over 38 yards per punt.

The Yeguas defense was led by Justin Johnson and Aaron Buckley who each had 16 tackles. In addition, Justin forced a Panther fumble. Aaron also had one tackle-for-loss. Dillon Powell the captain of the defense had 10 tackles and one fumble recovery. Je’Quentin Breedlove had nine tackle, with one of them being a tackle-for-loss. Dillon Moya had six tackle from his cornerback position and Michael Feagan the other corner had 8 tackle and a 43 yard interception return for a touchdown. Tony Negrete and Jonathan Armijo each had a tackle-for-loss and Armijo recovered a fumble. In addition, Tony had 8 tackles and Jonathan had 6. Big Dameon Kar and Danny Turner helped limit the Panthers offense by making several big plays. While Joel Chavez had 6 tackle and Dylan Brinkman helped the secondary keep Burton from completing a single pass.

Even with the good offensive and defensive plays, the Yeguas lost 28 to 10. Looking for redemption, the Yeguas next travel to Thrall for a showdown with the Tigers on Friday September 7, 2007 at 7:30.
