March 28, 2008 – The Somerville Yegua Varsity Baseball Team improved to 2-5 in District play this week, with wins over Hearne and Onalaska. The Yeguas defeated the Hearne Eagles by a score of 15 – 2! Lil’ Red Moreno was the winning in the game and received outstanding defensive play from both the entire infield and outfield. Offensive standouts in the game were Tony Negrete, 3 for 4 with 2 rbi’s, Cody Holliday, 4 for 4 with 2 triples, and Dylan Brinkman, 2 for 3 with 3 rbi’s. For the second win of the week the Yeguas defeated the Onalaska Wildcats by a score of 10 – 3! Lil’ Red Moreno was once again the winning pitcher of the game and once again he received outstanding defensive play by the entire team. Offensive standouts in this game were Kyle Tomlin, 1 for 2 with 2 rbi’s, Dylan Brinkman, 2 for 4, D’Terian Mathis, 2 for 3, and Matt Coronado for 1 for 3 with and rbi and a run scored. Thursday March 20, 2008 – The Somerville Yegua Varsity Baseball Team lost a heartbreaker in extra innings to the Hempstead Bobcats by a score of 9 – 8. Despite coming up short on the scoreboard the Yeguas played an outstanding game both offensively and defensively. Offensively, the Yeguas were lead by Matt Coronado who was 3 for 5, Red Moreno who was 2 for 2 with a double, and Tony Negrete, Josh Maldonado, D.T. Mathis, and Dylan Brinkman who all singled. Defensively, the Yeguas were led by an overall solid performance by both the infield and outfield, and an outstanding pitching performance by Cody Holliday. Holliday had 12 strikeouts in the game and seven consecutive strikeouts at one point. The Yeguas will face the Lexington Eagles – Monday March 24, 2008, @ 6:00 in Somerville. GO YEGUAS!
